This is for good reason. The images out there of the tall, gorgeous people with signature mud caked hair and white smiles are alluring and interesting, especially to avid photographers. Many travellers attracted to African destinations, and Namibia in particular are drawn to the opportunity to be able to meet, interact with and photograph the Himba people and their cultural lives too as part of their experience.
Tuesday 16 July UK News feed. LAND ROVER has been forced to withdraw an advertisement showing a bare-breasted African bushwoman whose breasts are pulled sideways by the power of the passing vehicle after complaints that it was "racist and sexist". The advertisement for the Freelander, featuring a semi-naked Himba woman from Namibia in traditional dress, brought widespread criticism from human rights and women's groups.
It is the women that take responsibility to carry on this culture. This red cream is applied twice a day and a Himba woman never wash in water. Intimate wash consists of a homemade perfume made of herbs and aromatic branches, mashed with embers and then they let the smoke cover all parts of the body. To clean the abdomen they just sit on top of a barrel of burning perfume for a while.
The very last thing I wanted to do in Namibia was visit the Himbas. We pulled to the side of the road for her hungover friend to lean against the dusty van. We were a group of eight, on our way outside of Swakopmund to go sandboarding down the dunes when visiting a Himba village was mentioned.
Kaokoland — it sounds like some magical place in a children's story book or a kingdom where chocolate grows on trees, but this wilderness area in northwestern Namibia is neither. The region is home to the Himba people, or more correctly the Ovahimba, a tribe of nomadic pastoralists descended from Herero herders who fled to the area following their displacement by a rival tribe. The main access to Kaokoland is through the settlement of Opuwo, a typical frontier town that is rapidly becoming the commercial hub of the region.
The women as per tradition had their breast exposed. The Himba are an indigenous people of Namibia, who are famous for their red ochre covered skin. The women are known for the distinct hair and striking jewellery they adorn.
Gli Ovahimba sono un gruppo etnico di pastori nomadi che vive nella regione del Kunene, nella Namibia settentrionale. Finora si sono largamente sottratti alle influenze occidentali e mantengono orgogliosamente i costumi degli antenati. The Himba singular: OmuHimba, plural: OvaHimba are indigenous peoples with an estimated population of about 50, people living in northern Namibia, in the Kunene region formerly Kaokoland and on the other side of the Kunene River in Angola.
Distinctive for the ochre they put on their skin and traditional leather clothing - many people want to meet the Himba. Their images are widely used to advertise the country, but their numbers make up just one or two per cent of the population. They are a semi-nomadic tribe whose existence centres on herding and breeding sheep, cattle and goats.
